Recently I was asked to create a business plan for a non-profit that defines their mission to publish and create documentaries and exhibitions that use new media to broaden awareness and exposure to the ideas expressed by the organisation. Here is what I wrote for the Inlight Foundation, an organisation dedicated to dissemination of ideas of human consciousness for world peace.
InLight New Media
As a new millennia publisher and visionary InLight will utilize the latest in information distribution, and that means new media. One way to define what new media is, is to define what it is not. New media is not television programs, feature films, magazines, books, or paper-based publications. It is digital, networkable, dense, compressible, interactive and often compartmentalized into bite size servings that users can more easily consume.
New media takes traditional, finite forms of media and transforms them into infinite and expanding forms of information and entertainment. It allows a book to continue an evolution of thought and expression beyond the borders of its covers. It takes a documentary's edited form to in-depth micro-tangents that are tailored for each consumer's tastes and interests. It makes exhibitions an full featured, personalized, interactive experience of which one make take pieces with them wherever they go after they have left the physical space. New media allows content to be as deep or anecdotal as the consumer desires it to be, which will make all media more effective, enjoyable and successful in the future.
InLight envisions projects that will incorporate a primary media or presentation method we call touch points. From these primary touch points we will broaden the scope of each project with appropriate other media. Some projects will originate with new media and others with traditional media. In either case each project will reach its optimal audience through this media mix.
New and emerging media provide a rich and rewarding experience for the consumer. Today's consumer is accustomed to a virtual infinity of choices. We strive to provide inspiring information and highly vetted menus of additional information in rich, new media. Illustrated texts will offer short videos that further demonstrate the topic. If the one chooses, they could select more videos that reach even deeper into the subject matter, and from there they can explore yet another tangent on that topic in a vetted menu of external sources
Today lines are being blurred between network television, cable programing, on-demand, and internet television. Books are becoming e-books, exhibitions now offer virtual exhibitions at remote locations, meetings and conferences have video conferencing, webcasts, and downloadable speakers and presentations. The ecosystem of knowledge is being shared in every way humans can find and create. Now is the time to evolve with and into this new paradigm of being, thinking, sharing and acting as the human race on planet earth.
